THE NAME
American football is usually just called football in the United States and Canada. Elsewhere it is usually called either gridiron football or tackle football. Unlike soccer, which is called football in most places, the ball is generally advanced by throwing and running and less so by kicking.
ORIGINS
Walter Camp is the father of american football. He made important changes from rugby football in the mid-nineteenth century to create the new game. He added the line of scrimmage and down-and-distance rules. It continued to be developed by college coaches.
PRO FOOTBALL BEGINS
Professional football started back in eighteen ninety-two when William Heffelfinger got a five hundred dollar contract to play a game. The first pro league was the Ohio league. The National Football league formed in nineteen twenty.
