They were created in eighteen ninety-six as a penny candy by Leo Hirshfield for his candy shop. The recipe originated in Austria and the same recipe has been used for over one hundred years.

It was invented in nineteen twenty-eight by an accountant and was the first bubble gum. Like Tootsie Rolls, they were originally sold as penny candies and quickly became very popular.
