Ice hockey is a team sport played on ice. Two teams play against each other using sticks to direct a puck into the opposing team's goal. The first known set of ice hockey rules were written up by students at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
The the National Hockey League, or NHL, is one of the four major North American sports leagues. Worldwide, the NHL is the ighest level of ice hockey for men. Although the NHL has only six Canadian teams, Canadians make up the majority of the league's players.
Since hockey is a full contact sport, players need to wear equipent that helps protect them from injuries. The quipment included a helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, mouth guard, protective gloves, padded shorts, a jock strap, shin pads and a neck protector. Goalies need even more equipment.
