OVERVIEW

It is a Christian moveable feast that always falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in all four canonical Gospels.

TIMING

It marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent. After Palm Sunday Jesus was arrested on Holy Thursday, crucified on Good Friday, and then resurrected on Easter.

The palm is a symbol of triumph and victory, but since palms are not easily accessible in all climates they are often substituted with branches of native trees such as yew, willow, and olive.
