The first winter olympics were held in Chamonix, France in nineteen twenty-four. Before then, ice hockey and figure skating were events at the Summer Olympics. The winter and summer olympics were always on the same year until nineteen ninety-two.

BEFORE THE WINTER OLYMPICS

Before the Winter Olympics, there was another multi-sport event for winter sports called the Nordic Games. It was first held in Sweden in nineteen hundred and one. Its founder was also a member of the Olympic Committiee and lobbied to have winter sports added to the Olympics.

DEMONSTRATION SPORTS

Sports included over the Olypics have changed over the years. Before new sports are included they need to first be introduced as demonstration sports. But many of the demonstartion sports don't become official Winter Olympic sports such as, sled-dog racing and the winter pentathlon.
