Cat Facts

The facts do not print. Only the puzzle will print.

The domestic cat, or housecat, is the most popular pet in the world and have been associated with humans for at least 9500 years. Cats may be solitary hunters, but they are social creatures and use a variety of ways to communicate including vocalizations, body language, and pheromones. Their vocalizations include meowing, purring, hissing, growling, trilling, and grunting. I'm sure you've heard all of these sounds from some cats you know. The body language includes the position of the ears, position of the tail, kneading paws, and the general level of relaxation of the body. We all know what an arched back and hissing means.

Male domestic cats are more likely to fight than females. Male domestic cats will generally only fight to establish their territory in the home. Female cats sometimes fight to defend territory and will fight to protect their kittens. Spaying female cats and neutering males will reduce or eliminate the fighting. While fighting, a cat will raise its hair and arch its back to appear bigger. It will also lower its ears and turn them backwards. This is both to protect the ears from damage and potentially hear what is happening behind them while their attention is focused in front of them.

The Cat Fancier's Association recognizes 41 breeds of cats. 16 of the breeds are considered to be natural breeds which had probably existed before human began breeding them. The remaining 26 breed shave been bred by selective breeding for specific traits. Cats can have a great variety of fur colors and patterns as well as body types. Their fur can be in patterns like the tuxedo, tabby, tortoiseshell, or colorpoint, all white, or smoky. Their bodies can be long and narrow, or short and stocky, or somewhere in between. Hmm, somewhat like people in that way.

Cats have the ability to learn tricks, learn new behaviors, communicate needs and desires, and to apply their knowledge to new situations. Some cats have even been known to create and use a tool for a specific purpose. Although Siamese cats are considered to be one of the most intelligent cat breeds, it's really impossible to compare the intelligence of various cat breeds without a clear definition of cat intelligence.

Until recently, it was commonly thought that cats were domesticated in ancient Egypt around 3,600 years ago. However, a 9500 year old grave was excavated in Cyprus that contained skeletons of a human and a cat. This is now the earliest known association between humans and felines. The ancient Eqyptians may not have domesticated cats, but they did idolize cats. They were considered to be sacred creatures and were often depicted in sculptures and other forms of art.
