GENERAL FACTS
Penguins are birds but they don't fly, they swim. They have wings which are used for swimming. They can swim about fifteen miles per hour. They hunt for fish, squid or shrimp in the oceans of the southern hemisphere for food.
PREDATORS
Penguins have a number of predators, both in the water and on land. Leopard seals are a major predator but other marine mammal predators are sea lions and orcas. Land predators include ferrets, cats, snakes, lizards, foxes, and rats.
CHICKS
Penguins lay one or two eggs at a time. As soon as the female lays the eggs she dashes off in hunt for food, leaving the male to watch the nest. She may be gone for up to two weeks before returning so that the father can leave to get food.
