Did You Know...

  1. Halloween originates from Irish Celtic culture. In the Druid religion, November 1st was the start of the new year. On October 31st the celebration would begin and the souls of all who passed away during the past year would rise up and roam the streets. This is where the tradition of wearing costumes on Halloween comes from.
  2. Oiginally, faces of lost souls were carved into pumpkins and a lit candle was put in the hollowed carved pumpkin. The carved pumpkins with their glowing faces were placed onto doorsteps to ward off evil spirits. This is the origin of the jack-o-lantern.
  3. Turnips were originally used by Europeans as jack-o-lanterns, but when settlers came to North America they found that pumpkins were much more common than turnips. So pumpkins became the traditional North American jack-o-lantern.
  4. The most popular classic hallowen costumes (not based on a character from a book, movie, or TV show) are:
    • Princess
    • Witch
    • Monster
    • Ninja
    • Clown
    • Pirate
    • Angel
    • Pumpkin
    • Vampire
    • Cheerleader
    • Cat
    • Ghost/Ghoul
    • Soldier/Sailor
  5. The Celts originally called the holiday Samhian, which means summer's end. It was a celebration of the souls of all the dead from the previous year. The Christians tried to minimize this pagan holiday by creating a version of their own in which they celebrate the souls of the hallowed dead. The day was called All Hallow's Day and the celebration which started the evening before was called All Hallow's Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween.

Halloween printables are a wonderful way for young kids to embrace the holiday and all the fun that Halloween brings. Parents can print them out for their kids to enjoy at home or teachers can include them in their Halloween time lesson plans.
